Monday 10/13/2014: Hattori Hanzo presents Clipper Cutting w/ Cream The Barber.

A couple of weeks ago, my buddy Chris aka Cream The Barber presented the opportunity to assist him in his Hattori Hanzo Clipper Cutting class. While at one point the opportunity to have my own haircutting class presented itself, I truly felt that (at that moment in time) I wasn’t fit to teach anyone “my” techniques. But, that was a while ago! And helping out for a class wasn’t something I couldn’t do. So, it was done!

The class was held at a salon in San Jose called Stocks and Blondes, which oddly enough was a salon I was relatively familiar with. The salon was set up to accommodate 40 or so stylists/barbers. At first, I was skeptical that it would be that big of a class, but as we got to the salon, finding an empty seat wasn’t easy! Pretty sure there were a few people left standing.

GAMETIME!

20141013-200149-72109093.jpg

Since we were dealing with more stylists than barbers, getting them hip to clipper lingo was important. Funny enough, a majority of these gals probably have been doing hair far longer than I have, but weren’t well versed in barber terminology for the hardware we use. But… that’s expected… Since it’s not something they do on a daily basis, it’s not surprising that their knowledge of clippers wasn’t the same as a barbers, especially since a majority of them were used to scissor-over-comb everything! But, with a crowd this eager to learn, it wasn’t difficult getting them up to speed.

After the theory portion of the class, it was time for the fun part… THE DEMO!

Chris has his way of fading, which is similar to many barbers, but is also different from a lot of barbers… yeah, get it?

Now: How does he fade? WELL…That’s something you’ll have to learn by attending one of his classes! Trust me, it’s well worth it. Why wouldn’t you invest in education for yourself?

The tools and implements he would use to perform the haircut.

What haircut would he demo? Of course, one popular one that you’ll see at least 3 of done in a shop: A zero fade with a sidepart/undercut/hardpart/combover/name that ‘do.

Full attendance ready to learn!

Demonstrating one of many ways to set a guideline.

Throughout the demo, questions were asked, and where I could shoot my feedback, I would. I also asked a few questions that the class wouldn’t have asked, but felt it were something that would benefit them. I mean, hey, I’m here to help in any way I could!

Can’t be a Hattori Hanzo class without using some Hattori Hanzos!

Quick before and after!

After the demo was finished, the salon cleared out and there were 6 stylists left for the hands-on learning portion of the class. Now I could help out a bit more!

For the most part, it went smoothly. Obviously, getting a hairstylist that is only comfortable doing scissor-over-comb to go as short as 000 was a mission! Hell, getting their clients to get comfortable with them going that short was a task in itself! But, with all learning experiences, it’s something you have to ease into. Definitely glad that a majority of them were up for the challenge. But the hard part? Was not having the right tools to perform the cuts!

Now, a lot of stylists usually have an Oster 76 with only a handful of blades, or the familiar Wahl Designers. But not everyone in the class had the tools on hand, or the right blade, or guards. So, for some of them, a bit of improvising was done. Others had to borrow blades from others. And getting them to be comfortable with handling the clippers was something that took a bit of getting used to. But hey, we’re here to learn.

20141013-200759-72479972.jpg

The overall experience of teaching someone how to cut hair was a blast. It makes me kind of wish I were able to have my own classes! But, that’s something that’ll happen later down the line!

Having people willing to drop everything they know and do what you tell them to do made the experience that much easier. You’re usually met with rhetorical or backhanded questions whenever you try .to “teach” an existing stylist how to cut hair a certain way. It’s a given… You have people who have been doing something one way for several years, it’s not like you’ll be able to change their views on haircutting in one go. But, once you let them know that 2+1=3 as is 1+1+1=3, they’ll get it and become a little more welcoming to learning a new trick or two.

Big thanks again to Chris aka Cream The Barber for the opportunity! I can’t wait to be cutting in his shop, where it’ll be like having a barbering class all day long!

Well folks, I hope some of you are excited to see me posting again. Trying to work in the time to blog, work full-time and be a father is a daunting task! But hey, it has to be done!

So stay tuned for more barbering related posts, backlogged pomade reviews, and more!

Until the next time…

POMP HARD!!

Here are a few more haircuts over the last few months. You can see slow progression from certain cuts, which is definitely something I’m excited to see! Can’t stop won’t stop growing with this profession… Once you start to get complacent or cocky, you’re fucked! Ain’t nobody got time for that type of barber!

Recap: Viva Las Vegas 16.

Unlike previous VLV trips, this one was last-minute. While we did have the rooms booked since last years VLV15, the original plans fell through and I had to figure out how I’d be able to make it out there without a plane ticket or a hotel room… Not exactly the ideal way to plan a trip, eh?! Plus, it wouldn’t be my best showing, since I hadn’t had that good ol’ VLV prep (dieting and all that good shit!) I figured- fuck it! And after a couple of phone calls, rushed packing, and a sketchy car with no radio, I was on my way to Viva Las Vegas 16!

Viva Las Vegas 16.

Hey folks,

As we all know, I’ve been to the last two VLVs and they’ve been nothing but fun and amazing, especially since I’ve met a lot of cats and gals who read this here blog! In turn, I’ve also missed one too many Easter Sundays with my kid. So, I’ll be making this VLV16 my last VLV. I would skip this one completely, but it’s the right time for me to gain inspiration that will help mold my creative angle for my barbering career.

And hey, since this is my last VLV (at least for a while,) let’s make it worth while!

I’m looking to book haircut appointments for this upcoming Viva Las Vegas 16… last minute, I know… But, if you’re interested in booking a haircut appointment with me, I’ll be around from Friday to Monday. Shoot me an email to set an appointment.

Thanks all, I hope to see you all there and have a ball!

Recap: Viva Las Vegas 15

Ahh…  Viva. Las. Vegas. What’s there to say about it? Even if you’re an elitist who now hates the event for all the newcomers who have “ruined” it, you’ve got to admit… it’s a ball. I mean, really, who doesn’t enjoy drinking with people from all over the world, hearing music we dig 24/7, and for us fellas, the babes??? I sure as hell dig it!

From waiting in that inevitable line for your morning coffee, talking to a burlesque babe about beavers, to passing out drunk in the afternoon, just to wake up and do it all over again an hour later, it’s safe to say that no matter how many years you have gone to Viva Las Vegas, you still won’t have enough time to do everything. While this was only my second VLV, it was far better than my first one, and I know it can only get better with the years and friends to come!

Viva Las Vegas XV

With VLV right around the corner, a lot of people are doing a lot of last-minute prepping.  I know I am! I’ve got a haircut appointment in a couple of hours, and I’m going to go from my hair reaching under my nose, to being above my eyebrow. I haven’t gone that short in a long time, so let’s hope it works out for the best! Fortunately, I’m not leaving until tomorrow morning, so I shouldn’t be jamming my unmentionables in my suitcase last-minute.

But, here’s the gist of what I’m bringing:

Keepin’ the photo black and white, so y’all don’t know exactly what I’m wearing!

Pretty much got my bases covered:

– 10 pairs of underpants.
– 7 or so shirts.
– 3 pairs of pants.
– Black wife beaters.
– White undershirts.
– A handful of bandanas.
– A handful of socks. (Should pack more.)
– 4 pomades; Dax High & Tight, Stiffies, Black & White, and Dixie Peach. (I’m gonna add some Mr. Ducktail’s.)
– A fuck-ton of Altoids. (Y’all know I love mints!)
– 2 pairs of shoes. (A mistake I made last year, by bringing only ONE pair of boots. Of which, I am bringing again this year, but I’m going to go comfortable with my loafers!)
– A few days worth of protein powder.
– The only non-studded/non-pinned denim vest that’ll be seen at VLV.
– Stickers. (I should’ve bought more!)
– And whatever other toiletries that are not pictured.

I should be set, right?

If anyone wants to meet up, here’s a few gigs I plan on catching:

Thursday:
Big Sandy & The Fly-Rite Trio.
Luis & The Wildfires.

Friday:
There’s a Tumblr meet up, set up by Miss. Charlie, 3:00 at Brendan’s .

Saturday:
Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys.
Duane Eddy.
The Polecats.
J.D. McPherson.

Remember, these aren’t all the gigs I plan on catching, but a few of em. So if you wanna meet up, just let me know! therebelrouser@yahoo.com

Alright folks, I think this’ll be the last post until VLVXV is over. So, until the next time!

Pomp Hard!

Upcoming Events.

Alright, enough with laying low. Here are a few rockin’ events to check out!

This Friday, at The Uptown, Deke Dickerson will be playing. Definitely gonna be a good show!

Our friends at Royalty Tattoo Collective will be throwing their first art show. And how is this pertinent, you ask? It’s simple… IT’S A TRIBUTE TO STAR WARS!!!

And lest not forget, the following week, Viva Las Vegas 15 will be a hoppin’! I’ll definitely be there. So whoever wants to hang out and drink a few, just shoot me an email! therebelrouser@yahoo.com

And right after that, the annual Booze, Broads, & Hot Rods show will be in full effect! In Burlingame, no less! Nick Curran was supposed to perform there, but as we all know, he’s fallen (again) on hard times. All we can do is hope for the best and wish for Nick to finally kick this shit in the ass, so he can get back to making the ladies sweat!

But, that doesn’t mean they don’t have some badass bands lined up and ready to go!

Upcoming Event.

Sorry for the lack of event updates, folks. I’ve been laying low. ‘How low,’ you ask? Well, I just happened to miss Kim Lenz & Big Sandy, that’s how low!

Well, at least there’s a rockin’ event coming right around the corner!

Wild Records artists Omar & The Stringpoppers, Dustyn Chance & The Allnighters, and Texas Steve & The Tornados will be rockin’ at the 23 Club, on November 26. Each show from Wild has been well… WILD, definitely not one you’ll wanna miss. So you can best bet I’ll be in attendance, getting my Jack Daniels on!

Some come on out and have yourselves a ball!

Upcoming Events.

Sorry for the lack of event flyers, folks. I tend to post up event flyers for ones I actually plan on attending. But as of late, I’ve been laying low and hermit crabbing on Friday/Saturday nights.

Summer is coming to an end, school will be back in session, but that doesn’t mean jack shit for rockabilly events! Some of the best ones happen AFTER summer!

CHECK EM OUT!

I’ve stopped posting flyers for the Haight Street Hop, because it should’ve been embedded in your head, that it happens every first Friday of the month! But, they switched things up and now it’s every SECOND SATURDAY of the month.

To kick off the new change, there’s gonna be Burlesque Bingo! First of all, bingo? Hell yeah! I’ve won a good bingo game as a kid, so you can best bet that I’m gonna give you a run for your money!!! Second of all, burlesque babes??? Oh hell yes! And when you put the two together, along with some a lot of booze, you got yourself one hell of a Haight Street Hop! This is one that you definitely don’t want to miss!

This one is new to me, but it sounds amazing!

First of all, it’s in the Fillmore district. If you know the history of the Fillmore district musically and historically, you’ll know that this will be the place to be! A celebration for 100 years of San Francisco nightlife and fashion? If you ain’t comin’ in dapper, you ain’t comin’ correctly! I’m sure everyone will be in their best duds. Which makes me feel as if I should look for some new threads… Definitely will have the calender marked for this!

And of course…

The Bop! The lovely Bombshells always throw a great event. And every event I’ve gone to, at the 23 Club, has been rockin’! Throw the Chop Tops in there? This night is gonna be wild, loud, and just as good as the last one, if not better!

Signs & Signifiers.

With the recently announced band line up for Viva Las Vegas 15, people have freaked! There’s a lot of familiar names on this line up, that have been making ladies change their panties and guys… well, I don’t know what some of you guys do, but you can let your imagination run wild. Though I missed a majority of the bands I wanted to see last year, the line up was real good. But this year, oh man… Let’s just say, I’m pretty fuckin’ stoked!

There will be a lot of great bands performing this year. Including: Big Sandy & The ORIGINAL Flyrite Trio (OH FUCK YEAH,) Omar & The Stringpoppers, Billy Harlan, The Polecats, Nick Curran, Jack Baymoore & The Bandits, and the list goes on and on and on. For the semi-full band list, click here.

With events like this, everyone will have their favorites marked on their planners and iPhones. Since a lot of these bands are scattered around, you better know who you’re gonna see and when you’re gonna see em, and where!

For me, I plan on making up for last year and will catch every band I want to see, even if that means staying sober for the whole trip! Well, maybe not entirely sober… There’s one band that I will not miss…
