Pomade Review: Layrite (Super Shine)

Water-soluble pomades have got to be the most popular pomade on the market to date. I mean, there are brands popping out of the woodwork pumping out some cool pomade! But only so many have been able to make their pomades stand out from the rest, and one of those brands is the one and only Layrite. Being one of, if not, the first water-soluble pomade brand around, several brands race to achieve the popularity Layrite has amongst other products around.

One thing that Layrite fans wanted, was some shine. As we all know, most/all water-soluble pomades dry with a matte finish- for the most part. People have been asking me for ways to add shine to such water-soluble pomades. And well, Layrite heeds the call! They’ve kicked things up a notch, by releasing their newly developed Super Shine pomade.

This stuff comes packed in the same white plastic container as the other Layrite products. Using a deep wine red label with gold foil trim helps differentiate it from its Layrite brethren. Personally, I think the color is odd in comparison to the other two products, but since it is an entirely different product type- it gets a pass.

Opening it up, you see a pastel orange cream-type product. This throws off many cats, as they’re used to seeing a gel-type product. Well folks, let’s introduce you to something new!

Getting this stuff out of the container is not difficult whatsoever, you’ll find that this stuff feels like a cream-type pomade. The closest product I’d compare the product consistency to, is 360 Styles (with Layrite being much lighter.)

The only real downside this product has is the scent… For the most part, it is scentless. But, it has the smell of plastic, which I’m assuming is from the plastic container. From what I’ve heard from gossiping pomade enthusiasts, is that they’re working on developing a (new) scent for it. With the lack of a desirable scent/any scent, it has turned off a number of cats from using it on a daily basis. Hopefully we’ll see and smell something fresh in the near future!

Applying this stuff to your hair may be tricky. Due to the sticky texture of the product, you have to make sure your hair has the “right” amount of moisture in it, to ensure even distribution. Trust me, I’ve got stuck with a fat skidmark right down the center of my head, when I had too much water in my hair! I guess I could’ve passed it off as the bleach streak some cats rock?

Combing up a pomp with Layrite Super Shine can be tricky, especially if you’re used to how the original two products comb. Unlike most water-soluble pomades, this stuff combs just like a grease. No really, it does! One thing that attracted me to this stuff, was the ability to effortlessly shape a well-rounded pomp with it, without any tugging (giggity.) And since this stuff combs through like a grease, you won’t be left with flat shield pomps, that most water-soluble pomades leave you with if you don’t comb them right. Definitely something that I can dig!

The hold of this stuff is like a light medium-weight pomade. So don’t expect any crazy height like you’d get from their Super Hold pomade! But, you will have a greasy lookin’ pomp, without the worry of staining your ladies pillow cases or couch cushions, all while having a slick ‘do! Take a look…

This stuff will retain its hold throughout the day… for the most part. I found that if you try to slick through it dry, it’ll cause it to looks the slickness from the original styling, causing you to (pretty much) restyle your hair completely. For most cats, this isn’t a big deal, but for the rest of you– make sure you got your comb or brush near by a sink!

Overall, I gotta say I really dig this product. You all know how much I dig 360 Styles, and since this is like it’s completely water-soluble little brother, I’ve got no complaints whatsoever! It’s great for modest pomps and for when you want that greasy look, without actually having to go to that “greasy kid stuff.” For you cats looking to add some shine to your flat water-soluble pomades, or if you just want to retain that greasy look while you’re degreasing, this is definitely one to look into!

Now, this review is only for it as a standalone product. So stay tuned for the video, showing you how to use it as a top-coat, adding the nice greasy sheen to your Layrite Super Hold or Layrite Original pomade!

Big thanks again to Mike and the folks at Layrite. Hopefully, we’ll see a little somethin’ somethin’ between Layrite and The Rebel Rouser in the near future!

Until the next time.

Pomade Review: Steel Toe Pomade

One thing I’ve liked about having my blog, was that it wasn’t limited to just the rockabilly cats. I know it’s been utilized by barbers, stylists, shops, models, gentlemen, ladies, and the list goes on and on and on. But, there’s another scene that’s taken a liking (at least I think a liking) to my blog, and that’s the hardcore/straight edge scene.

Was it surprising? Not really. Was it surprising that a straight edge cat would make a pomade? No. So, when Tanner Swift of Redeemer emailed me about his pomade, of course I had to try it out! I know a lot of hardcore kids like to stay slicked and want that pomade that’s made just for “them,” so, here’s that pomade!

Getting the can, the label design is clean and simple: A red boarder, reading “Steel Toe” on top and “Pomade” on the bottom, and a Popeye The Sailor aesthetic cat with a pomp and (steel toe boots,) with two anchors to the left and right of him. Now, I know a lot of older folks have been perplexed by this design. I won’t say why, but I’ll let you folks have your way in the comment section.

Opening it up, you see a nice pale, creamy looking pomade. Right out of the can, you get a strong scent of clover.

20121008-170132.jpg

Now, Tanner was hesitant about emailing me, as he’s taken note of my distaste for wax-like “pomades.” Prior to receiving the pomade, he told me that the pomade was a lot waxier than most, and to be honest with the review, whether I liked it or not… Well, that’s what y’all dig, right? Honest reviews? And if anyone wants to say my reviews have been anything but honest, speak up now, or forever hold your peace!

Now, for the moment of truth…

As I’m prepping to scoop this stuff out, I got my fingers in The Claw mode and was ready to dive right in. To my surprise, it didn’t take all that much effort, and I ended up digging a whole lot of it out! Yeah, thanks for the “warning,” Tanner!

20121008-170214.jpg

Surprisingly, this stuff wasn’t as waxy as I had imagined. Yes, it has a waxier base, as do a lot of home-brewed pomades go, but this one had a bit different texture to it- it was waxy, but as soon as you rubbed it in your palms, it melts away. This made it a lot easier to spread thoroughly into your hair, which is definitely nice.

After spreading it in my hair, combing it up was pretty smooth. The way it softens up, allows you to comb through with ease, without much of a drag or pull. While it isn’t waxy enough to make my waxy hair lay stick straight, it didn’t make my hair waxy like some products with similar textures.

Styling a pomp with this stuff isn’t a struggle at all. It combs through like a pomade, and holds your hair in place like a wax. Surprisingly, it held up really well in the heat! I mean, I drove down the freeway with my windows down and hair pomp’d high on a hot day, and the only hairs that got moved out of place was at my left temple, because it’s closest to the window; all the other hairs stayed in place! My pomp did not even split.

20121008-171822.jpg

Once it settles, you get left with a slightly matte finish. It’s not entirely matte, as seen above, but it doesn’t have the sheen you’d get from regular petrolatum pomade, due to the waxier base. I know there’s a few of you that want something strong like some of the other pomades on the market, but don’t like the petrolatum/greasy sheen you get from em; so this may be right up your alley!

Overall, I have to say I’m really impressed with Steel Toe Pomade. Tanner definitely did his homework. For you cats liking wax-like holding products, but not the overly waxy texture, this stuff would definitely be choice. It’s strong enough to keep my wavy hair looking good, but not too waxy to make straight hair shoot straight out. The winning factor for me was the type if hold it offers, plus, it not being like what Tanner had “warned” me about. Maybe he intentionally made his pomade sound ‘bad’? Just kidding…

Big thanks again to Tanner. Real sorry for the late review, man!

Guest Blogging: Top 5 Pomades

I’ve been asked by a number of bloggers to “guest post” on their sites. For me, it’s more than flattering… I mean, why me??? Haha. Especially for some of these blogs, they make mine look like your reading out of a notebook. But, I guess that’s what folks dig about my blog, right? The originality? Anyways…

Though I haven’t done any guest blogging in the past, I didn’t pass this one up. Frank has given me some great tips, to aid my barber school journey, so why not show some appreciation by guest blogging?

The topic is “top 5 pomades,” and I’m sure you folks would want to know what my top 5 are, right?

So click here to swing by Frankie The Barbers blog, to check out my top 5 pomades! I’m sure you’ll dig it!

With the increasing demand for pomade, several cats have changed their ways of purchasing these greasy cans of goodness. Rather than buying two to three tins, they’ll go ahead and buy a whole case. I mean, if it’s something you use on a regular, why not? Don’t tell me you never finished a case of beer from Costco! And trust me, if I could buy whole cases of certain pomades, I most definitely would!

Now, not all shops will offer you wholesale pricing, if you buy multiple cans. Let alone, wholesale pricing for certain pomade brands that sell for a premium. Fortunately, we’ve got the answer!

A little while back, I got an email from Bianca from Christiaan Import & Agency. At first, I was a little skeptical, since usually, I’m the one to get in contact with companies first! But after a few email exchanges, I knew there was nothing fishy going on, and she was just reaching out, looking to share her affinity for pomade. And hey, who better to talk pomade with, than me?

She also sent me a tin of Black Diamond, to see what I think about it. And if you’ve met me, you know I can talk a lot about a pomade, haha. So get ready for
a long email, Bianca!

Long story short, she recently launched her website, HairPomades.com, which offers wholesale distribution for great pomades such as: Black & White, Black Diamond, Dax, and so on. With some of these brands hard to get individual cans of, it’s definitely great to have the option to buy em by the cases! I know a lot of cats have been wanting this! Same goes for barbershops and boutiques alike.

So, for you folks that have been looking to buy some pomades at wholesale, whether you’re a barbershop, boutique, or just a general consumer who loves a certain pomade, this is your one stop shop! She’s looking to add more brands, so stay tuned!

Big thanks again, Bianca!

Until the next time folks.

Pomade Review: Tres Flores Molding Pomade.

If you’ve used a water-soluble pomade for some time, you know how much money goes into the “investment.” So, it’s only expected to look for a cheaper alternative. And ever since the loss of the ever-so beloved Grease Monkey by Monkey Brains, people have been asking me for that “better” alternative. And by “better,” we’re obviously talking about price points. Well, I think we may have found the answer!

Tres Flores has been around for quite some time. I mean, I’m pretty sure everyone has been around that greasy stuff at some point. If anything, you know the scent, whether you’ve smelt it in your grandfathers hair or a barbershop. But, Tres Flores has a new product out, that many of you aren’t as familiar with. So, let me introduce you to the Tres Flores Molding Pomade, which may end up being your next go-to water-soluble pomade!

When you see this product, it comes in the ever-so iconic Tres Flores colorway: Green lid, yellow product, and red label. There’s no way you can confuse it with anything else! Like most water-soluble pomades, this stuff comes in a plastic container with a screw top lid.

Opening it up, you see a rich, golden gel-type pomade. This stuff is much more translucent than other water-soluble pomades I’ve used. For many, the scent from Tres Flores was too overpowering, but, it still left them with warm memories of their childhood. Fortunately, the Molding Pomade has a similar, but much more subtle scent. So if you enjoyed the scent of the original pomade, but hated how overpowering it was, this would definitely be one to check out!

Scooping it out, you’ll find that the consistency is softer than most water-soluble pomades on the market.

Rubbing this stuff into my palms started to show the type of pomade it was going to be. It literally melted in my palms, which to me, meant that there wouldn’t be too much of a hold. Automatically, I knew this was going to be the lightest water-soluble pomade I’ve ever tried.

Spreading this stuff evenly through my hair wasn’t a challenge. It’s so light, it’ll literally go through your hair like melted butter… not saying I know how melted butter goes through my hair…….

As I mentioned above, combing with this stuff is smooth. Don’t expect that good-ol’ tug-of-war with the hair and comb. It’s not that type of product! Since it combs so smoothly, it comes just as malleable as a medium weight grease, which is real nice! With some water-soluble pomades leaving me with squared off pomps, it was real nice to see something as light as this, be malleable enough to shape a rounded pomp, and strong enough to hold it!

Now, don’t expect any super-sized pomps with this stuff, as I said, it’s the lightest I’ve ever tried! But if you like medium to low profile pomps, with nice shape and form, this stuff will definitely do the trick. Take a look:

Unfortunately, I’m not entirely sure how readily available this stuff is. From what I’ve seen, stores have only had one to two containers, trying to see if their local demographic will take enough liking to it, before they make a full-fledged order of it. So, if you’ve come across Tres Flores in your local grocery store, check back to see if they’ll carry the Molding Pomade.

Overall, would I say this is a “better” alternative to Grease Monkey, price wise? No. Seeing as people have bought Grease Monkey for as cheap as $1 or at buy-1-get-1-free deals, it was really hard to beat that! Makes you wonder why they’re no longer in stock, right? But product type wise, yes, I’d say I find the Tres Flores Molding Pomade to be a better product. It styles just as well as a grease-type pomade, holds decently well, and for me , smells good. Seeing that this stuff is on average $8-10 dollars, it’s really up to you cats to see if it’s ‘worth it,’ seeing it’s only a few bucks less than the rockabilly-specific gel-type pomades. But, as I mentioned in the beginning, in the long-term investment, it may definitely be worth it!

Well folks, I hope you enjoyed this review.

Until the next time,

Pomp Hard!

Pomade Review: Tres Flores

When I first started buying pomades, I was told that this stuff, for a lack of better words, sucked. So, I’ve held off buying it for the longest time. I’ve considered it several times just for the sake of reviewing it, but, never did. But, I caved in and bought it. I know it’s a classic in the Hispanic community. But I mean, it’s not like there’s a lot of Hispanics into rockabilly! (Obviously I’m kidding.) So, let’s see how this stuff fares for my thick and wavy hair!

In its iconic plastic container with a green lid and red label, it’s easy to spot this stuff on the shelves of any store. Around my area, this stuff was rather expensive. I’m talking $6.00 expensive. Why it’s so much? I have no damn clue. So when I found it for $3.00, it was an obvious buy.

Opening it up, you get that scent that everyone talks about, flowers. Yes, this stuff smells really damn good, I should’ve probably bought it a long time ago just for that! Let’s just hope the lovely Latinas flock to me like honeybees. I’m just kidding… No, seriously, I love y’all. COME TO ME!!!

Just as everyone said, this stuff is light and greasy. So getting it out of the container was a breeze. A nice smelling, greasy breeze.

Running this stuff through your hair is like any other light pomade or hair dressing. It goes in and stays in. Being light and greasy is how everyone described this stuff to me (it is a grease after all!,) so I never expected any sort of hold. I thought it would just plop my hair down, make it overly wavy, and just make a mess of things. Surprisingly, it did the opposite!

I cut my hair a bit shorter this time, just so I didn’t have to maintain my ducktail every two weeks. My hair grows really damn fast! So, I’m taking my shorter hair into consideration with this stuff. With my longer hair, I’m sure it would’ve held it down as expected. But, with my hair being slightly shorter, I was able to get some decent height with this stuff. Take a look:

To my surprise, this didn’t make my hair wavy like I expected. It actually made my hair manageable, allowing me to slick a nice pomp. The hold was also stronger than I thought. While it is light and greasy, I’d put this stuff in the lighter side of the medium weight end of the spectrum, in terms of hold. It kept the shape and height throughout the day, and still retained it’s nice greasy shine. And of course, the scent was reminiscent aswell.

Overall, I’m impressed with this stuff. It wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be! It’s light and greasy, just like any old school grease, so how can you argue with that? Don’t expect to get major height with this stuff, but if you dig lower-profiled ‘dos, then you should definitely check it out. It makes for a nice topcoat, with the greasy sheen and classic scent. Definitely a product to keep on hand.

Until the next time folks.

Video: Styling with Light Pomade & Boar Hair Brush.

After several requests for more videos, I got down and did one. Well… three… More like two and a half, but that’s besides the point. VIDEOS!!!

Video 1: A lot of people highly favor heavy pomades over anything lighter, at least when it comes to hold and styling, and when I started out, I had to agree. But, I’ve learned a couple of tricks here and there, which made me come to love light pomades as is. I mean, it is what they used in-the-day! So, hopefully this little trick will help you cats feel the same!

Video 1.5: This video is just a follow up from video 1, showing that the trick indeed does work! I went out for a couple of hours to run some errands. The day was hot, the windows were rolled down to catch a cool breeze, and the hair held nicely! And no, I did not recomb the pomp!

Video 2: In other videos and posts, I’ve mentioned that the ducktail was one of the most important details to a pomp, that is often left out. But, I also left out this important detail- slicked down sides! With a comb and a brush, you can only get the sides slicked down so much. But if you want your sides lookin’ super slicked, you might wanna invest in a nice boar hair brush! And please, don’t get them confused with badger hair brushes used for shaving!

Hopefully, you cats dig these tips and tricks!

Until the next time.

Stay Greasy and Pomp Hard.

Pomade Review: SCurl 360 Style Wave Control Pomade

Every time I’ve seen this pomade, I’ve seen it in its plastic container. And for me, I prefer the tins over the plastic containers. So, when I spotted a few of these metal tins, I knew I just had to pick them up. It didn’t help that my buddy Rusty showed me how this stuff works in his hair, which convinced me to look for this stuff. And by the way, his hair was lookin’ proper!

As I said, this is a product that you’ll usually find in the plastic container. But, if you happen to find it in the tin, why not pick it up? It’s readily available like Murray’s, so you should be able to find this stuff at a local grocery or drug store. Either way, both version of the containers are two-toned blue. It subtly sits on the shelf, but pops out amongst the rest of the products around it.

Opening it up is what discouraged me for the longest time, and chances are, discouraged most of you as well. When you look at it, you see a creamy lookin’ paste. Now, we all want that greasy shit- I would know, that’s what I dig! So when we come across stuff like this, it’s real easy to pass up. But, you’d be surprised when you actually scoop this stuff out!

As I said, you see a ’creamy lookin’ paste.’ But, surprisingly, this stuff is the opposite of that.

Scooping it out, you’ll find that while it is creamy, it’s far from a paste or typical hair cream. It is closer to a hair cream than a typical pomade, but it’s rather thick and somewhat greasy, as it has petrolatum as its main ingredient. The scent is pleasant, yet subtle, like a baby powder.

Now, if you’ve read the tin, it states that there’s no build-up. Which means, you gotta be attentive when applying this stuff. If you use more than needed, you’ll comb it right out and won’t be able to comb it back in. Trust me, I’ve wasted a good amount of this stuff, by using a tad too much! And you’ll definitely comb a lot more out, if your hair is too wet. So, apply a generous, yet, conservative amount to damp hair.

Combing this stuff is real nice, especially if you haven’t combed most of it out, from not applying it properly! It’s real easy to style with, like a nice medium weight pomade, yet, it holds in place like a gel-type pomade. While it does ‘harden’ a bit, it won’t harden as much as the usual gel-type pomades would. The tin states that it’s “non greasy,” which is true, but you still get a nice sheen from the product due to the petrolatum.

Now, it’s easy to pass up these types products, because they’re not “what greasers use.” But, just it’s because the pomade is ‘what “real” greasers use,’ doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll give you the best pomp in the world, or even a good pomp! Don’t believe me? Take a look:

Yes folks, this pomade is the one that did the trick. And no, I didn’t do a build up or use any other pomade with it. This picture was taken right after I put this stuff in for the very first time. So, save your “real greasers use this and that” argument for another day. Because the proof is in the pudding and this stuff works like a charm! And if it keeps my hair lookin’ this good, well, you can figure that out for yourself!

The tin also states that it “rinses out easily with water.” Key word being rinses. Meaning, you won’t wash this stuff right out with just water. Since it still has petrolatum in it, it will still take a good shampoo to wash it out. But don’t worry, it’s not something you’ll need to take olive oil to!

Overall, I gotta say… this pomade rocks. Big thanks to my buddy Rusty for introducing me to it. I really dig it and have already put a number of cats onto it. It styles really damn well, almost without fail. It was strong enough to control my waves, but wasn’t stiff to the point where my hair wouldn’t blend together. Plus, it’s cheap and readily available, how can you go wrong with that? This is definitely a pomade you cats should reconsider, the next time you walk into the ethnic section of your grocery stores.

Well, that’s all for now folks. We’ve got a few more store-bought pomades to review. And hopefully, they’ll build up a reputation, just like I know this stuff will! Until the next time.

Stay Greasy and Pomp Hard!

Pomade Review: Kustom Kreeps (True Fright)

Up next, is the last pomade from the Kustom Kreeps Pomade line, True Fright. To my surprise, this is one of the most anticipated pomades coming out of the Kustom Kreeps Pomade line. Being their lightest hold, I was sure that folks wanted to know more about the other two. But alas, this one got the most requests. (That’s not to say the others haven’t gotten their fair share of requests, but this one just had a few more!)

Again, amazing work from Nik Scarlett. Between the three, this one just happens to be my favorite. The grey face really stands out from the black and shades of red background. Any different color palette would’ve taken away from the design. So big ups to Nik for having good taste!

Opening it up, you get a pomade that looks like an orange slush… seriously. This stuff looks good enough to eat! And being backed with a root beer candy scent, it’s almost tempting!

Scooping it out, you might get the temptation to stick this stuff in your mouth, as the root beer scent becomes a bit more aromatic. To the touch, this stuff feels real greasy. And in the websites product description, it states that it’s similar to Brylcreem. But, how similar?

Imagine yourself (for whatever damned reason) being stranded in the desert, with a straw and a tin of this stuff. Yeah. You’d be goin’ to town!

Unfortunately, this stuff isn’t so much like Brylcreem. In comparison with the rest of the products, yes, considering this is their lightest offering. But in the hair product world, it’s far from it. Having a microcrystalline wax and petrolatum base, this pomade is considerably thicker and waxier than Brylcreem, which has a water and mineral oil base. And being waxier, means it doesn’t have the shine Brylcreem does, either.
Applying it is just like Monster Attack – easy.

When I first applied this stuff, it went into my hair straight out of the shower. And as most of you know, that’s not something I usually do. To my surprise, it didn’t clump or streak whatsoever. Unlike most microcrystalline wax products, streaks are almost guaranteed when your hair is remotely wet.

Styling with this stuff is nice, probably my favorite out of the three. It’s a lot more malleable than Monster Attack, which allows you to style up real nicely. But, don’t expect to get a lot of hold. Afterall, this is their light hold! Unfortunately, since I haven’t had a haircut in nearly a month, my hair (sides and back) was too long for this stuff keep things real slick, but just enough to keep the hairstyle tidy.

While the shine pales in comparison to Brylcreem, it still has the most shine in the pomade line. But the shine is just not like other light pomades or hair dressings. Take a look:

Note: I used this stuff during the weeks before my haircut and a few days afterwards, and I got the best results post-haircut. But, I’m posting how this stuff styled my hair pre-haircut, to show how it works with hair that’s “too long” (in my opinion) for this stuff.

Now, don’t expect this stuff to hold up in the heat, especially if you’re the type to go for height! But, if you like the ability to re-comb your products throughout the day, this stuff definitely allows you to do so, without sacrificing the initial styling shape of the hairstyle. And like the rest of the Kustom Kreeps Pomade line, this stuff transfers from your hair to whatever, especially in the heat. But I plan on revisiting this product in the winter time, to see how it holds in the cold. So don’t forget to check back then!

Overall, I really dig how this stuff styles- it didn’t control the waves in my hair, but it also didn’t over accentuate them. Now, personally, I wouldn’t suggest this pomade for cats with longer hair, it just doesn’t have enough hold to keep it all together. But, folks with shorter hair, it’s definitely worth checking out. It’ll hold the shorter hairs together nicely, while keepin’ things nice and slicked, just the way we like it, yeah?

Another big thanks to Calyn for giving me the chance to review the pomade line. It was a blast to use each and every one of em. I know I’ll blast through Death Grip this summer!

Again, it was a blast. Unfortunately, this just about wraps it up for the reviews for the Kustom Kreeps pomade. But, hopefully we’ll see more stuff from them in the future? Who knows. But until next time folks.

Stay Greasy and Pomp Hard!

Pomade Revew: Kustom Kreeps (Monster Attack)

When people heard that Sourpuss Clothing was putting out a pomade line, people scrambled to the internet to look for reviews… not that I’d know anything about that… Fortunately, thanks to Calyn, I got the chance to review their Kustom Kreeps Pomade line, to give you folks the reviews you’ve been looking for! Well, hopefully…

Having three pomades to choose from and not knowing which one had what hold, (or even if there were different holds,) I just decided to go with whatever was at the top of the stack. Why I didn’t just check with them or look on their website for the product description? I do not know, don’t ask… Enough with the rambling, onto the review of their Monster Attack pomade!

One thing you can expect from Sourpuss, is bright colors. Oh, and black! For the Monster Attack label, they used two shades of green with a black background, which looks killer! Though I’m (generally) not a fan of the whole Frankenstein/Zombie design thing, I’ll admit, these tins all have badass designs. These pomades are definitely worth picking up for the label designs, alone! I mean, just look at it!

Pretty badass, right?

Opening it up, you see a semi-translucent green looking wax. Now, I had no idea what I was getting into; whether or not this stuff was waxy, light, medium, or heavy weight, was unknown to me.

Initially, I thought this stuff would be similar to a certain German favorite, but after scooping it out, I was pleased to find that it wasn’t. Having not known this would be their medium weight pomade, scooping it out would have me assume it would have a medium type of hold and shine, due to its semi-greasy, wax like consistency and texture. Once you scoop it out, it’ll feel like a cross between a pomade and a wax.

For anyone who was concerned that this stuff would turn their hair green or give them green flakes, don’t worry! It won’t! This stuff will turn virtually clear when you rub it in your palms, so you won’t have to worry about colored clumps or flakes.

Now, while the tin says it has a mint scent, which it does, but, it gets muted due to the waxy nature of the product. But y’all know me, I dig anything mint. While it’s not like opening a tin of Altoids, it still smells good! I fucking love mint.

Applying this stuff is like applying a pomade, yet, you get a wax like hold. Unlike most waxy products, you can actually apply this to either damp or dry hair. Good stuff, right? And of course, if your hair is too wet, you’ll end up with some pomade streaks, but nothing that won’t go away with a comb.

Though it has a wax like hold, this stuff styles more like a medium weight pomade, but still keeps hairs together like a wax. It slicks the hair down real nice and is very malleable. It has enough hold to get some good height in the pomp, but don’t expect to get uber psychobilly with it. It didn’t completely straighten out my hair, but just enough to tame it, to get a nice swoop. And surprisingly, it has a semi matte/gloss finish… Don’t know what I mean? Neither do I, so see for yourself!

Now, for the downside…

This stuff melts…

My pomp didn’t split, nor did it fall down too much, just lost the initial styling. Fortunately, the greasy hair didn’t just plop across my face, like what happens with some other pomades. When it melted, the grease seeped down from my hair to a bit past my hairline. For the most part, this is a typical thing to expect from a pomade during the summer… but, it was on days that were barely pushin’ past 63 degrees outside. So you cats who live in an area where it’s virtually warm/hot year round, this isn’t pomade you’d want to go with, from the Kustom Kreeps line. But don’t fret, we still have their heavy hold and hotter days ahead of us, so we’ll see how that works out!

Since it did melt relatively easily, it also meant that this stuff would easily transfer from your hair to anything your head touches. Which, for the most part, is pretty typical, so no real complaints there. But, this also means that this stuff won’t be difficult to wash out. Just a simple rather-rinse-repeat and you’ll have this stuff right out of your hair.

Aside from it melting on a mildly warm day, I can’t say I have any other complaints about this stuff. It’s definitely not one I plan on using during the summer, but will definitely whip out on the cooler days!

Overall, I don’t think this pomade isn’t suitable for the upcoming warmer seasons, but I still dug what it did with my hair. As I said above, I’ll definitely be using it on the cooler days. This stuff would definitely work for cats with straight hair, as well as cats with wavy hair, the only trick is, the climate and season- which is something y’all gotta factor in anyways. So, if you’re looking for a pomade for the cooler seasons or live in a cooler climate, this stuff will definitely do the trick for ya, regardless of your hair type. And if you’re the type who just absolutely has to wash the grease out every other day, but doesn’t want to go the gel-type route, you may want to check this stuff out. If anything, these tins are killer, why wouldn’t you want them in your collection!?

Edit* Big ups to Nik Scarlett for these killer designs. I know a quite few of you wanted to know the artist behind the labels. Check out her work here.

Big thanks to Calyn. I can’t wait to review the next one!

Until the next time, folks.

Stay Greasy and Pomp Hard!
